The Trump movement's most revealing and defining moments β not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating β occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the US president started showing everyone his plans for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the eastern section to build it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad β the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and presently an analysis predicted his energy policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked β truly, no former commander would have conceived β unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.

As confusing as it is to observe the president seek toι’ θ¦ the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves β in older age cohorts almost a majority β who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into a figure of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment among Americans could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.

The evident and clear truth that the Jesus from scripture requests a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution β Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Highest of Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to observe the persistent defiance to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities in US history.
We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you receive him and welcome him or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, just as Christianity is best defended through connection to what makes it special and beautiful, which is the example of Christ.
