Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The anticipation about the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
