Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Context for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
