"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The sender also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have openly coveted the honor.

It's clear a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the best bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals frequently depict them walking in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to start a band."

"So anyone is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The group are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album emerged from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's honesty inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet Haim will consistently be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
