A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
